Katinka is one of the first world market shops to open in the East Village in Manhattan, NY offering trinkets and fashion from eastern countries, specifically India. The shop was established in the late 70s by interracial duo Billy & Jane. They partnered and opened the store while it was still controversial to be interracially married in America.

Billy is a Jazz musician and his music is adored by the community surrounding the small shop. Jane travels often to India to teach weaving and textiles. All of the pieces and clothing she brings back from southern or northern India are fair trade and organic.

Noticing upfront that they did not have a brandmark, I wanted to tell the story of how Katinka weaves together the intricate threads of New York City. You can find a little bit of everything here in this city and Katinka plays a large role in weaving the relationship of the East Village community together.

I started with being inspired from symbolic imagery from northern and southern India and then gradually found myself looking into the actual weaving of the fabric and textiles from certain villages.

Special Thanks to, Billy & Jane for letting me visit the shop to take pictures.
